Dressing For The Occasion: Cocktail Attire

Introduction

So you’ve received an invitation to a soiree stating ‘Cocktail Attire’ as the dress code. Cue puzzled expression and head-scratching.

Like many men, you’ve probably begun delving into the seldom seen depths of your wardrobe in a confused state with the hope of finding some magical solution to this rather ambiguous form of dress.

What exactly is ‘Cocktail Wear’ and how do you effectively execute this look?

Cocktail Wear

Firstly, let’s start by examining the occasions at which cocktail dress may be required. These occasions most commonly include (but are not limited to): weddings, anniversaries, christenings, certain sporting events, cocktail parties and formal birthday gatherings. In short, they’re events that require a little more refinement than the usual jeans and t-shirt combination.

Now we’ve cleared up the ‘where’ part, let’s look at ‘why’. What purpose does cocktail wear serve?

As the name suggests, cocktail wear emerged as a style of dress in the 1920s and 1930s for the hours between casual day wear and formal evening wear, when pre-dinner drinks and canapés were commonly served.

For the leisured classes between the wars, where the younger generation took a more relaxed attitude to alcohol consumption, ‘Cocktail Hour’ became a fashionable event. Pre-dinner cocktails were traditionally served from 6 p.m. and were important social occasions in smart London houses and hotels that required guests to be properly attired.

Too formal for day wear, yet too relaxed and too early for full black tie, cocktail attire emerged from the necessity for a semi-formal ‘between the hours’ dress code.

Taking into account today’s ever-increasing pace of life and relaxed sartorial standards, how should the modern man interpret the cocktail wear code?

The Key Components

1. Tailoring

The first and most vital component of cocktail wear is tailoring. The most common options are a dark tone or grey jacket and trousers. A textured grey wool-cashmere blend suit is always a safe bet, but opting for slightly brighter or unconventional shades (think olive green or burgundy) will give your outfit a contemporary edge.

For those of a more adventurous disposition, a subtle patterned suit can also work well. Try a dark windowpane check or a muted black watch plaid as a stylish alternative to solid tones.

It has also become acceptable to mix and match your jacket and trousers, but denim (even smart denim) is still frowned upon by purists and should be confined to casual weekend wear.

Always stick with a lean cut for your suit – it should follow the natural contours of your body comfortably.

Fashion show:Moncler Gamme Rouge Fall-Winter 2013-2014

Some experts say this Fall-Winter 2013-2014 season is going to be very, very cold time, that’s why Moncler Gamme Rouge offers fur-clad outerwear, including substantial parkas, parkas accessorized with hoods, mitts, and laced-up cuissardes. Models looked like rugged ice princesses clad in blockbuster outerwear designs, which remind me of an Arctic odyssey. Label’s creative director Giambattista Valli offers cape shape-like outerwear, warm down coats with crystal embellishments, mountain climbers outerwear like utilitarian jackets, ivory vests, fuzzy sweaters and big hiking-style backpacks.

Mens fashion:The Importance Of Reinvention

Introduction

Although here at FashionBeans we very much support timeless staples and curating a personal style that withstands any passing trend or fad, this is not to say we don’t see the importance in reinventing yourself.

Whether it’s through subtle wardrobe updates or a complete style overhaul, reinvention is a powerful tool both on a physical and psychological level. It is also something that helps us form our own identity, one that is both personalised and unique.

This idea is reinforced by a fantastic quote once said by musician and activist, Henry Rollins: “I believe that one defines oneself by reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself. To cut yourself out of stone.”

I’d challenge any man to not feel liberated by these words.

The Master Of Remodelling

When talking about reinvention, it’s essential to look at the influence of one person in particular. A man who helped shape the world’s perception of identity transformation, simply through constantly transforming himself. We are, of course, talking about the musical legend that is David Bowie.

Having first caught the attention of the British public in 1969 with a song called Space Oddity and his slight hippy style, he re-emerged a few years later during the glam rock era as his now iconic, androgynous alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. Complete with pale skin, fire red hair, an almost skeletal frame and a lightning bolt painted across his face; the master of reinvention had well and truly arrived.

After ‘killing off’ this flamboyant character, Bowie continuously altered his image throughout his career. He went from a blonde-haired commercial superstar, to underground electronic-minimalist living in Berlin; as well as countless other transformations.

Most recently he surprised the world by releasing his first record in a decade, The Next Day, which he had been working on in secrecy. This coincided with the hugely successful David Bowie Is exhibition, which took place in London over the summer.

OK, we know what you’re thinking. That’s all very well for a successful music artist who has used his reinventions as part of his stage persona, but how does that relate to the average guy on the street? Well, it’s all about taking elements of this dramatic end-and-then-begin-again strategy to keep your own style fresh and exciting.

A Revolving Wardrobe

When it comes to your style, reinvention will help keep things interesting. Nobody wants to be pigeon-holed as a ‘one trick pony’, so why not inject some excitement into your new season wardrobe? There’s only one rule: try something new for you.

Are you a city slicker who sticks to monochrome? It may sound cliché, but adding a splash of colour to your working wardrobe will reignite your confidence in the boardroom and banish the boredom in getting dressed.

If you aren’t ready for a colour-block suit, dip your toes into this trend and opt for some fun and quirky socks for a subtle take on the look:

Reader Request: How To Wear Boots With A Suit

Introduction

Although here in the UK we are currently revelling in the last few weeks of summer, other places across the globe aren’t quite as fortunate. Many sartorially-inclined men in more northern territories are already facing up to the fact that they will need to break out the heavy duty knits, boots and overcoats in the very near future.

And with winter fast approaching, situations often arise that would not normally occur if you lived somewhere akin to California. With this in mind, one of our loyal readers was kind enough to highlight one particular issue that I’m sure many others will have experienced:

Hi FashionBeans,

Since winter is coming soon, is there any way to wear boots with a suit? I live in Canada, where we get a lot of snow, slush, salt and cold weather.

Alex

It’s an excellent question. Most stylish individuals know to invest in quality footwear, and after a couple of years will have curated a respectable collection. I’m thinking black Derbies, tan brogues, brown Oxfords and oxblood penny loafers for formal events, along with a handful of trainers and suede styles for more casual occasions.

And although they’ll probably never admit to it, they’ve also got a pair of really ugly Wellington/hiking boots that they have ready for when the weather takes a turn for the worse.

However, the trouble with ugly Wellington/hiking boots is that they really don’t look right when put next to formal pieces such as a suit, as Alex mentions. So how exactly do you marry together these seemingly polar opposites on the sartorial scale? Well, it’s not as difficult as you might think.

The Right Type Of Boot

Firstly, not all boots are created equal. For a few years now, brands and designers at every price point have been creating stylish winter boots in a more sleek and simplified silhouette.

Gone are the outrageous huge treads in rubber soles, square toes and endless loop holes for needlessly long laces. In are durable yet soft leathers and classic colours and designs based on formal business shoes.

By adopting the characteristics of traditional formal silhouettes, this new generation of ‘dress boot’ is able to effortlessly pair with any tailoring you already own. Because, let’s face it, as soon as your trousers are on the hem will cover up the fact that it’s a boot and your outfit will look exactly like it does the other 90 per cent of the time.

Secondly, a chunky sole can be stylish as well. There’s a difference between the sort of sole that comes with a hiking boot and the sole that is found on a dress boot. Whether it’s a crepe, vibram or lug sole, all of them are super comfortable and really on trend right now, especially when paired with similar heavy duty pieces like tweed trousers, flannel shirts and denim jackets.

I would personally stay away from a thin or leather sole due the lack of traction it will give you when trying to traverse the wetter, slushier elements.

Elvine Menswear: AW13 Collection

Elvine AW13

Following on from the success of their SS13 range – and said to be their most sophisticated and refined offering to date – Swedish brand Elvine release their AW13 collection.

With this being their debut autumn/winter range launched in the UK, all eyes will be focussed on the cool streetwear brand this season. Effortlessly blending Scandinavian chic with wearable designs has ensured Elvine have gone straight to the top of our ‘must-have’ chart.

Working in a versatile seasonal palette of earthy hues, this casual collection features a full range of practical outerwear aimed at dealing anything the season can throw at it. With waxed finishes, reversible styles and varied forms of insulation, Elvine has truly delivered exceptional designs without relinquishing an ounce of style.

Other key winter wardrobe staples are interspersed throughout in the form of textured knitwear, workwear shirts and durable denims – all of which strengthen the collection’s wearable, rugged aesthetic.

The key to consistently achieving this look is to consider both practical layering as well as classic pairings. For example, key combinations within the accompanying lookbook include denim shirts with heavyweight chinos and boots, and chunky cable knits with slim fit jeans.

A highlight of the range is the Corby parka, which is not only down padded for warmth but is also constructed with water resistant fabrics. The Gulliver over dyed navy shirt and Orwell printed tee are also noteworthy.

Delivering a collection focused on both performance and achievable casual styling will no doubt see Elvine’s popularity continue to soar here in the UK.

You can shop the latets AW13 collection on ASOS.com from September 2013.
