Win it: Allen Edmonds Shell Cordovan Strand Oxfords

Cordovan Leather was a space age material lonnng before there was a space age. Hyper-durable, wildly smooth, and visually deep, it takes six months to transform a horse hide to this finished leather. The material itself is a piece of natural art. The master of Cordovan is the Chicago based Horween Leather Company. Cut and sew Horween’s top of the line product into the flagship dress shoe of the American Shoemaker Allen Edmonds, and you get a stunner of a combination.

A classic dress shoe with just enough flash, the Allen Edmonds Strand (especially in cordovan) is the holy grail of men’s footwear to plenty. They’re a half brogue with plenty of perforations and pinked edges, but the non-porous, glass smooth nature of the Cordovan gets shown off on the panels that are left free of those details. Wingtips are great, but when you’ve got leather like this, it’s easy to over-clutter with all those edges, stitching, and lines.

Trade This for That – The College Campus Summer Uniform

In the warm months of the year, it seems for a lot of guys that there’s a go-to outfit repeated over and over, nearly everywhere: gaudy graphic tee or logo tee, baggy cargo shorts, athletic sneakers. It’s an easy, safe bet for most guys to throw on, but if you want to stand out in a positive way, some would say there are better options.

The upgrades are relatively simple, and it’s easy to pick out an outfit that’ll keep you cool in the heat without sacrificing looks. Switch out that graphic tee for a well-fitting polo, preferably something with a bit of color, and boom, instantly more polished. If you’re looking to upgrade your style on a budget, places like Old Navy or Uniqlo have them for ridiculously low prices. The Old Navy Uniform polos are a good buy. Granted, the quality isn’t that of a polo from J. Crew or another higher priced brand, but it does the job just fine in the meantime. Fit is decently trim through the body and sleeves, and they come in a number of colors. No matter the brand, once you find one, it’s a piece that can help you quickly turn things around while you save up for larger style upgrades.

On the shorts front, a pair that hits above the knee while fitting slim seems to be in short supply on a decent number of college guys. Why add all the unnecessary pockets of cargo shorts, even if slim-fitting options exist? For about the price of a particularly wild (or not wild?) bar crawl, Land’s End Comer Chino Shorts (as worn here in these photos), do the trick perfectly, eliminating the pockets and extra fabric while providing another pop of color (especially if you keep the polo neutral).

And on your feet, you want a pair of shoes that’s comfortable enough to make the trek across campus, but clean and simple enough to take you out for a meal afterwards. In the photo, those are Vans sneakers (in the chambray option) from Urban Outfitters. Depending on where you pick yours up, that could be the most expensive part of the outfit (those were something like $60 in-store at the time). But, in a neutral shade, they can be worn sockless and with any color shorts or polo. They can also pull duty with jeans or cuffed chinos, and they avoid the ostentatious logo of some athletic sneakers. All good things, right?

On your wrist, it’s tough to beat a Timex Weekender for casual wear (or maybe a field watch with a neutral strap?). The dial runs small on some larger guys, but for most, it’ll be a nice, understated size at an extremely reasonable price point ($20 – $30). The slip-thru strap option allows you to add even more variety to your outfit, and compared to some ‘fashion’ watches out there nowadays, it’s more versatile and classic-looking.

There you have it. An outfit like this isn’t world-beating by any means; it wouldn’t make any street style shots or end up on the runways, but sometimes, simplicity is better – much better. Heck, wear an outfit like this two or three days a week, switching out the bottom for jeans and desert boots or the like, and there’s a good chance you’ll out dress many of your classmates. Upping your style game in ways like this will catch the attention of your professors as well, and dressing with a more formal bent just makes you feel better, more confident and hopefully, more alert for those 8 a.m. classes. Now, go hit the books.

Win it: The Timex T2N700 Fly-Back Chronograph

Black trousers and brown shoes? That’s a no-go. Black ion-plated watch on a tan strap? Aaaabsolutely.

For whatever reason, that combination works, and it works awfully well on this Timex Chronograph. It’s got a rugged thing going for it, the contrast is there, and that noticeable difference between band and case allows you to wear it with just about any other kind of leathers (belt/shoes)… as long as they’re casual. No need to get too “matchy-matchy” with the strap on this watch, or watches of similar style.

“Sweet” piece.

This chrono and it’s different color-scheme brothers are part of the “SL” line. As much as we all love the $35 weekenders you can get at Target, the SL series has beefed up construction, and extra functions. They’re not quite to the level as the defunct TX brand (TX is dead, right?) but you can see and feel the difference between these and a standard Timex Beater.

Great textured crown

Equipped with the Timex Intelligent Quartz movement, this watch gives you a standard chronograph as well as a 24-hour/second time zone function between 9 and 12. It takes a little button pushing to get the 2nd time zone set up, but the chronograph is standard and intuitive. The leather band is surprisingly soft and flexible, and like many Timex watches, this one comes with Indiglo.

The 43mm diameter is the sweet spot for many guys who are average to larger in size, and the watch does wear a bit smaller than that diameter. Nice weight to this one too. One drawback is the audible “beep” that goes off when you pull out the crown. Yes, it’s powered by a battery, but no need to shout about it.

Why Give a Damn About Appearance

Let’s start with a great question answered in an inspirational fashion by Antonio Centeno from Real Men Real Style. If you’re new to men’s fashion blogs, you may be wondering… “Why should I care?”

Antonio argues that you should care because, whether you like it or not, the way you dress conveys a lot of information about yourself. Without necessarily being a control freak, you should at least be aware of the impression you’re making on others.

He explains how dressing well can HELP you succeed in numerous areas of your life, including your career and your relationships with women.

The Underrated Solid Polo Shirt

In this post, Sabir M. Peele from Menstylepro.com has some great ideas on how to wear a bold polo shirt. We’re not talking about a classic, preppy RL shirt here. He takes a vivid red 70s polo shirt and teams it with simple, basic pieces, so that you can reproduce his outfits yourself.

Patterns 101: All you need to know about wearing, mixing, and matching patterns

Barron Cuadro has put together an “all you need to know” post on patterns. Very well structured, the author begins with a quick overview of the patterns you see the most often. Later, he focuses on the three points you need to consider (scale, color, and mixing) when wearing patterns. Start simple and learn how to take it up a notch without making your friends feel dizzy. For those who are in a hurry, the final list of dos and don’ts will set you up in a few bullet points.

Ways To Wear: Men’s Vests

Men’s Vest Lookbook

First, let’s get the creative juices flowing with some modern lookbook examples:

vests

vests

Look One: Simple Summer Style

The structure of the vest makes it perfect for the heat. Breezy, cooling and loose; the piece is a godsend when tackling temperatures over thirty degrees. When summer strikes, stripping back your style is often the best practice, so forget about intricate layering, heavy materials and the like for the few months of sun we see.

With that in mind, the vest can become an integral part of any simple summer ensemble. A print on the vest – whether it’s bold and brave (see tie-dye) or a sparse and subtle embroider – is a great way of injecting some personality and a focal point into your look.

Counter the unfavourable associations of the vest by combining it with a set of superbly tailored shorts. A pair with a streamlined cut that finishes a few inches above the knee is ideal – don’t go too short in length and resist the bulk of the cargo or board short.

Finish your outfit with a pair of minimal trainers, boat shoes or, if you’re feeling a bit more daring, leather sandals:

Look Two: Bold & Bohemian

The opposite of simple and minimal, try adding a touch of bohemian to your summer attire. Opt for a vest in a louche fit: one that isn’t sloppy and in danger of displaying nipple, but a more relaxed take that doesn’t border on indecent exposure. In this case the vest is kept plain and neutral and the statement is provided by a pair of printed trousers.

Once again, avoid extremely skinny cuts. Slim or straight fits will allow air to circulate between your trousers and legs, keeping you cooler in high temperatures. Not to mention a more relaxed silhouette lends itself extremely well to any boho-inspired aesthetic. We keep the light and airy feel of this ensemble going right down to the footwear with a pair of leather sandals.

You could always opt to cut the outfit there, but if you want the full bohemian look, in the manner of a certain Johnny Depp, then invest in some key accessories. Stick to the rule of three with two pieces of jewellery combined with a great piece of head wear.

A ring, bracelet and on trend Panama hat would be our three picks to complement this look, which oozes confidence:

Look Three: Smart-Casual Layering

When the weather begins to turn and the temperature is in a mood of fluctuation, use the vest as a go-to layering piece. Helping to keep you cooler than a t-shirt, the vest often has a neckline that differs from its sleeved counterpart, making it a great way to mix up your look.

Vests

Vests

The blazer is undoubtedly this year’s key piece and even though mixing one with a vest is the ultimate formal/casual juxtaposition, it works staggering well. This combination could be used to dress up a casual look in the weeks leading up to summer, at night when temperatures drop or during the transition into autumn. Just make sure you keep the vest neutral and plain and stay away from styles that are tight fitting and/or skimpy.

A timeless navy blazer is a definitive wardrobe staple and would really demonstrate its versatility within this outfit. However, this look is also the perfect opportunity to inject bold statement tailoring into your attire – something that is very much on trend yet still completely unsaturated. Think colours and prints to really set your outfit apart.

Lightweight trousers, in cotton, linen or a blend of the two, should be your first port of call come the seasonal transition. Within this look they cement the smart-casual theme that runs throughout. Loafers or suede shoes are a considered and seasonally-appropriate choice.

Finish off with a rakishly tucked pocket square and, for the complete dandy accompaniment, consider something that has slipped off the sartorial radar of late: the neckerchief.

Look Four: Sports-Luxe

The vest is traditionally considered workout gear, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be taken out of the weights’ section and inserted into a look ready for a casual day of errand running.

The sports-luxe trend took off last year due to the Olympic Games influence. This year we’ve been treated to another sterling summer of sport, meaning sports-luxe shouldn’t be discarded just yet.

Layer a bomber over the top of the vest to bring the outfit up a notch, and then make the contentious decision to wear your sweatpants outside of the house. Keep the sweats slim and contemporary (see our previous article on the subject) in order to maintain your style standards.

Complete the look with a pair of simple, sports-inspired sneakers. New Balance made the cut here but Jack Purcells, Chuck Taylors or Adidas Sambas are other astute choices:

Look Five: Nautical Nuances

Nautical is a perennial summer trend that never fails to make an appearance. Work a vest into your look with a nautical-inspired version, complete with timeless Breton stripes, and prepare for a spout of wet weather with a lightweight rain jacket layered over the top.

Neutral, lighter tone chinos take the outfit down a slightly more refined route yet they work effortlessly with the top half – Riviera chic meets rugged, fisherman-inspired style.

Complete the look with low-cut suede boots. For those looking for something summer-appropriate, try boat shoes – they will help reinforce the nautical theme and could provide an unexpected injection of colour:

Men style:How to choose a men’s shirt

A shirt for every occasion

It’s a vast topic and before you ask yourself how, you should ask yourself what you want the shirt for.

Cos there’s a time and place for everything: you’re not going to turn up at work in a going-out shirt or vice versa. Don’t bother trying to copy those guys who just untuck their work shirt from their trousers when they go out in the evening – they’re just stupid. But whatever you do, do go for a shirt without pockets!

The ‘business’ shirt

A suit shirt is a suit shirt, whether you tuck it in to your trousers or not. If you choose to wear one with jeans, you have no choice but to tuck it in. Indeed, suit shirts are far too long to leave untucked – you’ll look like you’re wearing a nightshirt!

If you wear your shirt tucked into jeans, you have to go for a belt (even if your jeans are already tight enough). Choose wisely because a belt is very often an eye-catching accessory. Choose a chunky one to go with jeans, with a strong buckle. Leave ‘slim belts’ to the fashionistas wearing Cheap Monday – trust me, you’ll make their day.

One last favor: you know those dark shirts (black, dark blue…brown)? STOP! As for the stripe overdose…DITTO!

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO aaand NO!! (horrible cut, ugly stripes, too dark and to top it all off…what about a pocket?!)

Here are – FINALLY!!– some ACCEPTABLE stripes!

The ‘casual’ shirt

Let’s move on to other shirts now, precisely those that you can wear untucked… The length of the shirt is essential and it should come about halfway down your thighs, no further…any longer and you’ll go back to looking like you’re wearing a nightshirt.

Don’t get your hopes up for finding such cuts in cheap mass market retailers stores. Or at least, not if you’re not prepared to have a really good look for them. Only H&M and Zara have shirts that aren’t too expensive and are nicely cut (think around $25-30).

No-Go Areas: scribbled painting effects, slogans that don’t mean anything, rough materials…

Small checks for afters

The not-so-little details

One detail that should definitely not be overlooked when you buy your shirts is the collar. A good, stiff, straight collar will give your shirt a lot more presence and elegance than a floppy collar without whalebones (that little thing inside the collar that makes it stiff).

On the same note, if you can find a shirt that also has stiff and chunky cuffs, it’s a bonus. Once again, you’re going to have to look at higher-end brands to find one…(having said that, there are sometimes some in H&M). NB: the cuffs on your shirt should come down to somewhere between the end of the wrist and the first bone in your thumb when your arms are dangling loose.

A good length of sleeve + a stiff collar + a material that cries out for you to touch it = a beautiful white shirt

The quality of a shirt’s material

One more thing when it comes to choosing THE shirt: the material! Nothing could be easier – it has to lake you want to touch it. Out with shoddy, rough fabrics. But, as always, you can’t pay with peanuts when you want a lovely, soft shirt with accentuating patterns that catches the light in all the right places…

To give you an idea of what a good material really is, have a walk round a luxury store. And then when you see something of the same quality at a better price – buy it! (there are some gems out there when you know what to look for!)

A nice quality of chambray brings a casual shirt to the next level (kind of like selvedge vs regular denim)

And we saved the best til last: the cut!

Last but not least, ALWAYS choose a fitted shirt, like the one in the photo. As far as possible, keep your distance from all that is straight-cut (unfortunately this is apparentlt the most popular design amongst shirt fabricants!) – the parachute effect? Don’t go there!
