Calibre Menswear: SS14 Collection

Calibre SS14 Collection

Whilst we are getting ready to embrace yet another unpredictable British winter, one thing that we can predict with certainty is that the following season is set to provide some of the most stylish looks seen in recent years.

With the industry working a season in advance, now is the time when designers reveal their SS14 collections, and the styles that are surfacing really do seem to ooze effortless cool.

One such label displaying an example of this effortless summer cool is Australian based Calibre. An attempt to juxtapose formal separates with more casual, sports-inspired pieces has resulted in an extremely achievable aesthetic with noteworthy style points.

Colour pops make a welcome appearance throughout this otherwise seasonal palette of navy and light neutrals, whilst simple layering techniques effectively display the wearability and versatility that this collection in built upon.

Accessories add a touch of character and help to individualise the looks (shown below), with bold ties, sleek satchels and vibrant pocket squares appealing to the city dweller.

Highlights within this offering include the grey polo with contrast collar, the on trend herringbone bomber and the seasonally-appropriate unstructured blazer in beige. However, the green shorts immediately stand out and catch the eye. Featuring a versatile fit and design, this piece strengthens the notion of green becoming a key colour trend once again next summer.

Brightening our autumnal mood slightly with their superb mix of modern, summer-appropriate separates, Calibre are set to attract the style spotlight down under next season…

Barbour Dept. B Menswear: AW13 Collection

Barbour Dept. B: AW13

We at FashionBeans like to think that every heritage brand has a dark and secret past. A past that includes a secret team constructing products so forward thinking, so advanced and so cunningly courageous that when the time is right, they will burst onto the scene and change the world of menswear for good. We may just be getting a glimpse of such a department in the form of Barbour’s Dept. B.

Dept. B, housed in the depths of Barbour’s South Shields Factory, used to specialise in customisation. It was a department that would cater to the customer’s individual needs and desires – whether it be a hidden trim, an unusual stud or a bottle opener masquerading as a zipper. No detail was considered too abstract or ‘out there’, and no task was too tiresome for Barbour’s fastidious clientèle.

Inspiring Barbour’s new men’s heritage collection for AW13, these former individual requests are being celebrated in the brand’s most intricate collection to date: Dept. B.

The debut Dept. B range sees Barbour staples given a subtle yet meaningful makeover. The olive Hunnam wax jacket is customised through its shorter length and darker composite black wax cotton; the Cassell wax jacket features a hidden stowaway hood and a distinctive curved contrasting front placket; whilst the Pym Zip Thru, Dart Tee and Hatch Polo have all been customised via bursts of contrasting colours, textures and trims – the likes of which have rarely been seen from the brand before.

The collection really does celebrate the attention to detail and sense of exclusivity that some people look for in their clothing. Ian Bergin, Head of Menswear at Barbour, remarks that “there are many jackets in Barbour’s archive that feature unusual customisations, all of which tell their own story about the wearer of the jacket and offer interesting clues about their life.”

He goes on to say that the collection celebrates the design of clothes “for a modern man who appreciates the thought and meaning behind the hidden technical details that can be found in a garment.”

Even the most subtle of customisations can be found within the latest collection. Barbour’s Commander Jacket, as worn in the latest James Bond blockbuster, Skyfall, references its muse in the product code that includes the famous 007 numbering in its composition.

FashionBeans might not be divulging state secrets through the coverage of Barbour’s latest AW13 collection, but you can be rest assured that there are plenty more customised items in the depths of the brands archives that have yet to make it into the public domain.

Peregrine Menswear: AW13 Collection

Peregrine AW13 Collection

Take a superior knitwear brand with decades of experience and combine it with a tweed label with a history dating back through generations. The result is an autumn/winter collaboration with so much tenacity and style that the ensuing seasonal weather will not know what has hit it.

Peregrine’s AW13 collaboration with the world-renowned Harris Tweed company gives an exciting new dimension to the British label, with subtle Harris Tweed inserts at the shoulders becoming one of the signature pieces of detailing for AW13.

Peregrine’s rich mustard, navy and burgundy knitwear reinforce the British heritage aesthetic whilst more jovial retro striped sweaters encapsulate the light-hearted nature of the brand. Made from 100 per cent merino wool or a 50/50 blend of merino and British wool, Peregrine’s knitwear offers the best of both style and practicality.

Key outerwear pieces, full of function and finesse, come in the form of the ‘Baxter’ jacket and an improved fisherman’s ‘Cagoule’. The hooded Baxter jacket – made from Vachetta 6 wax with rear shoulder vents, elbow pads and drawstring waist – is ready to face elements from both a climate and style perspective, whilst the Cagoule, in this season’s must have colour, vibrant orange, features contrasting navy pockets and provides all-year protection due to its British Millerain Vachetta Wax Cotton construction.

With the accompanying lifestyle imagery featuring guitarist Jesse Wood, son of Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood, the brand strikes the perfect balance between strong family ties and British heritage – the definition of the Peregrine customer. It also helps that the Rolling Stones are quite possibly one of the greatest bands in British rock ‘n’ roll history.

With Peregrine expanding into the Japanese market but keeping its production base firmly in the U.K., you can be rest assured that the quality of construction and the brand’s roots will continue to flourish.

Men’s SS13 Fashion Trend: Tailored Shorts & Shorts Suits

True fashion followers always attempt to stay ahead of the seasons in order to be one step ahead of the trends – so although your body might currently be craving woollens and layers, your head should be thinking about what might be when the sun pops his hat back on. And based on the collections showcased at various fashion weeks across the globe, one of the key pieces for SS13 are tailored shorts, and the notion of shorts suits.

It may not be particularly ground-breaking to report that shorts are going to become an influential piece of menswear come spring/summer. Nevertheless, what you should be aware of is the style of shorts that are likely to become popular and the items you choose to pair them with.

It is clear from my research that a more traditionally tailored style will be favoured by the majority of the high street come SS13, and as Shortlist magazine writes: “It’s all about the slim cut – from hip to hem.”

The high fashion designers also demonstrated a penchant for shorts paired with blazers. The concept of the shorts suit (aka a suit jacket worn with matching shorts) has been simmering within spring/summer collections for several years now – could SS13 be the season that this trend comes to the forefront?
